Reflexology St. Catharines-Brain Matters Wellness

First of all Reflexology is not a “foot massage“. Scott is not doing a “spa” treatment, what he is doing is a therapeutic treatment. Massaging or pampering the foot may feel good but does nothing to stimulate the reflexes and assist the body’s natural response to normalize the metabolisms. Scott may incorporate some massage techniques in the treatment to relax the patient but the bulk of the treatment is in no way a massage. You should feel deep pressure. Scott will “probe” the feet to look for congested areas. When he finds those congestion areas, deep pressure techniques will be applied to de-congest those reflexes. This may be painful. The pain will only last as long as his fingers are working on the congested area. You will not go home with pain on your feet, but you will be very relaxed and stress relieved.

Reflexology is a focused pressure technique, usually directed at the feet and hands. It is based on the premise that there are zones and reflexes on different parts of the body which correspond and are relative to all parts, glands, and organs of the entire body.

Some Conditions found to benefit from Reflexology:
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Addison’s Disease
Bladder Infections

How Does Reflexology Work?

reflexology-chart-2When the reflexes are stimulated, the body’s electrical energy works along the nervous system to clear any blockages in the corresponding zones. A Reflexology session seems to break up deposits, which I can feel as a sandy or gritty area beneath the skin, which may interfere with the body’s electrical energy in the nervous system.

The International Institute of Reflexology, founded in 1973, has the view that energy is constantly flowing through channels or zones in the body. Those channels terminate to form the reflex points on the feet and hands. When the energy flow is unimpeded, we remain healthy; but when it becomes blocked by tension or congestion, disease occurs. Having treatment done on the reflexes helps to break down blockages, thus bringing homeostasis and harmony to the organ systems.

Manipulating specific reflexes removes stress, activating a parasympathetic response in the body to enable the blockages to be released by a physiological change in the body. With stress removed and circulation enhanced, the body is allowed to return to a state of homeostasis(normal state).

The Benefits of Reflexology

  1. Relaxation with the removal of stress
  2. Enhanced circulation
  3. Eases pain
  4. Preventing disease
  5. Improves the quality of life
  6. Assists the body to normalize the metabolism naturally
  7. Complements all other healing modalities

Continuing use of Reflexology results in improved response to the stresses of the day. Also, used in conjunction with other existing forms of therapy to supplement ongoing medical treatments. Reflexology has been known to help clients deal with physiological symptoms such as the side effects of cancer chemotherapy.

Anybody can receive a reflexology treatment – from babies to elderly. The treatment focus can be for relaxation, as a general ‘tune- up’, or to assist an unhealthy body. Furthermore, it is safe and helpful to receive throughout pregnancy, or most pre surgical and post surgical situations.

People that should not under any circumstance receive reflexology include anyone with the following:

  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Acute infection with high temperature
  • Stroke- in the first two weeks
  • An unstable pregnancy
  • Contagious conditions – eg. athletes foot

Why Water is so Important!!

water1Water and reflexology work hand in hand to heal the body and promote balance. Whenever receiving reflexology the person receiving should always drink plenty of it during and after the treatment- drinking more than usual for at least 24 hours following any type of reflexology treatment. A person’s body will begin to work harder to get rid of waste the moment reflexology is started!!! If the body is receiving reflexology (and therefore working harder to get rid of waste) it needs the extra H2o to transport all the waste out of the blood and body. Without it to help get rid of waste, the excess waste can cause blockages and make the person feel worse!! This can be evident in flu symptoms, blocked sinuses and headaches. Here is a story that best explains its importance. Imagine that a bunch of miners are digging away in a deep mining shaft, and all of the dirt and rocks that they dig up are put into carts and hauled out of the mine. Reflexology is the same as sending in extra miners to dig the mine faster. H2o is the extra carts to haul away all the extra dirt and rocks that the extra miners dig out. Without the extra carts the mine will quickly become blocked and even less efficient than before.

As a certified Reflexologist I do not diagnose or treat any illness, disease or condition. Reflexology as a whole is not a cure for any disease or illness. Its use is intended to help promote balance and harmony within the body through relaxation and stimulating increased blood circulation.
